What is Non-Specific Lower Back Pain?

As the name suggests, non-specific lower back pain (NSLBP) is lower back pain which is not caused by any precise pathology. This means that pain is not able to be attributed to a diagnosable cause, such as a fracture, arthritis or a bulging disc. This type of back pain can be influenced by a combination of muscular imbalances and lifestyle factors, both of which are able to be addressed with exercise.

How is Non-Specific Lower Back Pain commonly treated?

Exercise has been cited as one of the most effective ways to manage NSLBP. The focus of treatment is finding exercise options that are non-provocative and help to relieve pain. A personalised exercise program could involve a combination of strengthening exercises and mobility techniques along with addressing other lifestyle factors that are contributing to pain.
