Middle Aged Man Having Shoulder Ache.jpg

What is a Rotator Cuff Injury?

Your rotator cuff is a group of small muscles within your shoulder which are responsible for keeping your shoulder joint stable. A tear of any of these muscles will usually occur in the tendon and can occur due to many different reasons, such as trauma to the joint, overuse or even just degeneration with aging. Tears within these muscles can make your shoulder feel painful and weak when performing activities like reaching overhead, grabbing objects from a self, or heavy lifting.

How is a Rotator Cuff Injury commonly treated?

Depending on your goals, surgery may or may not be required for a rotator cuff tear. Typically, more severe tears in people who will be returning to high-level sport will be more likely to need surgery. However, if your goals are more focused on living an active life with normal shoulder function, then conservative treatment (e.g. Exercise Physiology) is a smart option. Treatment of a rotator cuff tear will involve self-administered mobility techniques to restore range of motion and a range of strengthening exercises to allow normal use of the shoulder again.

How can an Exercise Physiologist help?

Regardless of whether you require surgery or take a conservative route to rehabilitation, an Exercise Physiologist can play a big role in your rehabilitation. An Exercise Physiologist is a specialist in exercise rehabilitation and can help you rebuild your shoulder and achieve your health-related goals, whatever they may be.
