What is a spondylolisthesis?

A Spondylolisthesis is a condition where one vertebra will slip forward of the one below it. This can lead to pain, stiffness and irritation of the nerves between those vertebral levels.

Spondylolisthesis

How is a spondylolisthesis commonly treated?

Despite seeming like a complex and serious issue to deal with, treating the condition does not need to be overly complicated with the right guidance. Treating a spondylolisthesis focuses on restoring balance to surrounding muscles of the spine and pelvis, to help to offload the forces on vertebral structures. This is achieved by identifying what may be the cause for the original issue, and correcting this through a personalised exercise program involving mobility, stretching and strengthening exercises.

How can an Exercise Physiologist help?

We understand that you might have reservations around exercise and movement given the nature of the condition. An Exercise Physiologist is equipped to help guide you through the process of identifying the most effective exercises for you and helping you perform these exercises with confidence. Further to this, treatment would involve education regarding how to adjust or improve your movement throughout everyday life to avoid re-injury and exacerbation.
