What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition whereby the body becomes either more resistant to the effects of insulin or loses the ability to produce insulin or a combination of both. What this means is that the amount of glucose, or sugar, that is in our body will build up over time which causes inflammation and overproduction of insulin. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reported in 2015 that around 1 million Australians have Type 2 Diabetes. Common symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, hunger, lethargy, blurred vision, altered sensation in the hands and feet. Diabetes can often go undiagnosed for many years and can be tested through a blood glucose (sugar) test.

How is Type 2 Diabetes managed?

In some circumstances your GP may prescribe you medication to improve the management of diabetes, however, this only plays a role in the management along with lifestyle changes including exercise and diet. While there is no cure for diabetes, common management of type 2 diabetes is a combination of regular physical activity, weight loss, decreased waistline and an improved diet. The management of diabetes requires a consistent long-term approach with continued support throughout the process.

How can an Exercise Physiologist help?

An exercise physiologist can perform an assessment to better understand your exercise history, current fitness and strength levels to create an individualised program specific to your needs and current situation. Exercise is found to improve insulin sensitivity for up to 72 hours, so it is beneficial to implement regular exercise throughout the week. As such, an exercise physiologist will work with you to incorporate more physical activity into your lifestyle and provide guidance on the most beneficial exercises for you.
